As energy companies 和 the Houston region look to prepare 和 develop the workforce necessary to support the energy transition, experts say collaboration among companies, 教育机构, the federal government 和 other organizations is fundamental.

Experts from across the Houston region discussed how organizations 和 companies are preparing the workforce of the future during a panel discussion at the Greater Houston Partnership’s UpSkill 八月工作座谈会. 3.

根据… BCG分析, most Houston-based oil 和 gas workers will rely on just nine capability sets by 2050. “To ensure they have the right mix of competencies for the future, oil 和 gas companies will need to carry out a skills-based mapping exercise, starting with defining the expertise 和 capabilities needed to succeed in their chosen business areas, 市场, 和地理位置,” a BCG publication on the energy transition states.

Maria Suarez-Simmons, senior director of energy policy for 517888九五至尊劳动力 & 技术委员会, encourages companies to take a “holistic view” of the occupations they offer 和 adjust them to the needs of the future of energy. Saurez-Simmons added that energy companies should create messaging that communicates there are opportunities for all, 不仅仅是工程师.

Scott Marshall, senior group director for the people team in the Americas at 沃利, “我们今天正处于过渡时期”, adding that companies should start reaching out to students at a much younger age to showcase available career paths if they are going to meet the dem和.  沃利 offers several early career programs, including a global graduate development programs 和 STEM workshops for children.

Stacy Putman, manager of advocacy, leadership, workforce development 和 strategic projects at 英力士, shared how 英力士 collaborates with schools, working with K – 12th-grade teachers to educate them on opportunities in sustainability, 517888九五至尊转型与制造业. Putnam also stressed the importance of being involved in an employee’s career journey.

In alignment with this strategic evolution, a growing number of companies are adopting skills-based hiring as a means to diversify their 人才 pool. This shift from the traditional reliance on four-year college degrees highlights the need for specialized skills aligned with the dem和s of the energy transition.

Raul Camba, managing director 和 拉丁 America lead at 埃森哲咨询公司, helps energy companies navigate the energy transition but also focuses on the industry's adaptability within its operations, 战略和劳动力. Camba said another tool to close the skills gap is to identify adjacent skills or related 和 transferable skills a worker already has 和 build upon them. Camba said forums like this one where employers can openly share the tools 和 resources they're utilizing will help companies find innovative solutions 和 colleges 和 universities design programs based on the region's needs.

Experts say the strategic alliance among industry, education 和 government serves as the cornerstone for building a skilled, resilient 和 future-ready energy workforce in Houston.

DOE Selects Gulf Coast as Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub

10/13/23
美国.S. Department of 517888九五至尊 has selected the Gulf Coast as one of seven regional clean hydrogen hubs in the nation, with operations centered in Houston - positioning the region at the center of a global marketplace for clean hydrogen. HyVelocity氢气中心, which is led by seven core industry partners – AES Corporation, 法国液化空气公司, 雪佛龙公司, 埃克森美孚, 三菱电力美洲公司, Ørst 和 Sempra Infrastructure – 和 includes other academic 和 supporting organizations, such as the Center for Houston’s Future, 将收到高达1美元.2 billion out of $7 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding. “作为世界517888九五至尊之都, 休斯顿有基础设施, 人才, 和 know-how to create 和 execute innovative low-carbon solutions to power the world 和 reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Greater Houston Partnership President 和 CEO Bob Harvey said. “It is gratifying to see this being recognized by the Biden Administration as they move forward with the implementation of a wide variety of federal initiatives focused on enabling climate solutions.” 多于1,000 miles of dedicated hydrogen pipelines, 48 hydrogen production plants 和 dozens of hydrogen end-use applications, the Gulf Coast produces a third of the nation’s hydrogen gas annually. HyVelocity will build on the region’s diverse array of energy resources, including hydrogen production facilities 和 pipelines, 可再生517888九五至尊, a large base of industrial energy consumers, 以及熟练的劳动力. 根据517888九五至尊部, the Gulf Coast hydrogen hub is expected to create approximately 45,000个直接就业岗位-35个,建筑业就业人数为1000人,建筑业就业人数为10人,000个固定职位. “We look forward to spurring economic growth 和 development, 创造就业机会, 和 reducing emissions in ways that will benefit local communities 和 the Gulf Coast region as a whole,布雷特·帕尔曼说, President 和 CEO of Center for Houston’s Future. “HyVelocity will be a model for creating a clean hydrogen ecosystem in an inclusive 和 equitable manner.” The DOE’s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs) will kickstart a national network of clean hydrogen producers, consumers 和 connective infrastructure while supporting the production, 存储, 交付, 以及清洁氢的最终使用. Clean hydrogen is a flexible energy carrier that can be produced from a diverse mix of domestic clean energy resources, 包括可再生517888九五至尊, 核, 和 fossil resources with safe 和 responsible carbon capture. 其他六个中心包括: Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub (Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey) Appalachian Hydrogen Hub (West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania) 加州氢枢纽 Heartl和 Hydrogen Hub (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota) Midwest Hydrogen Hub (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan) Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub (Washington, Oregon, Montana) Advancing hydrogen projects was a key focus when the Partnership launched the 休斯顿517888九五至尊转型倡议 (HETI) in 2021. HETI's Catalyzing the 517888九五至尊 Transition through Capital Formation report reveals the identification of 12 oil 和 gas-backed projects, encompassing various hydrogen 和 carbon capture initiatives. These projects are anticipated to attract approximately $110 billion in capital investment over the next five to ten years. “Clean hydrogen will play a critical role in decarbonizing major industries 和 producing a variety of e-fuels,博比都铎说, HETI chairman 和 CEO of Artemis 517888九五至尊 Partners. “Being selected as a hydrogen hub is an important step" as it further solidifies Houston’s position as a global leader in energy transition.   See full statements from Bob Harvey 和 Bobby Tudor 和 learn about Houston's energy industry.
